Halloween Pronunciation Escape

Can your students work together to guide their thirsty vampire to the tasty blood, avoiding the garlic along the way? Can they quickly get him back out again before the sun rises and turns him to ash? Can they do this with only their pronunciation prowess? Hmmm, let's see.

This new activity is being introduced for Halloween, but it might stick around a bit longer... minus the vampire, the garlic, and the blood. It is a fun way to practice /l/ vs /r/ pronunciation.

We will be adding more versions, practising different target sounds, in the future, but Premium Users can customise the game right now, adding any sounds they want their students to practice.

Please note: The desktop version shows two phones so, with a smart board or projector, you can demonstrate the game for your students with two screens side by side.

See below for full instructions on how to play.

Instructions

Pairs of students must navigate a vampire through a maze of deadly garlic to get to a delicious puddle of blood. They must then navigate back out again in under 2 minutes in order to to escape before the sun rises and turns them to ash. They do this by giving their partner directional instructions. Instead of up, down, right, left, Player A will read out the sentences on the directional buttons. Player B listens. Both players must click the navigational buttons to move together through the room.

Both player scan the QR code. Player A clicks "A" and Player B clicks "B".

The Pronunculator

Ok, so it's a silly name, but it's simple, fun, and effective.

Select the target sound from the dropdown list. You have a selection of minimal pairs or you choose a "Challenge" which involves a "minimal ten"! Put your students in pairs or small groups. Show them the QR code.

At this point they need to think of a number, for example their phone number. They must dictate it to their partner using the words on their screen rather than the numbers. Their partner can type the words that they think they hear into their Pronunculator and, once finished, check to see if they have got the number correct.

If you want them to try again they can think of other numbers such as their house number or birthday, or press the "Random" button, which will generate a random 10 digit number for them to dictate to their partner.
